2020 Course

This will be an expanded, improved course based on my earlier courses on “How to Make the Computer a Medium of Artistic Expression”. I will be adding material on educational software design and simple mathematical methods for use in game and educational software design.

The course will operate on a weekly cycle. Students will read the assigned material, and once a week we will meet by Internet video for one hour to discuss the material. This video meeting will NOT be a lecture on my part; the students are expected to bring their questions and arguments to the meeting so that we can INTERACT. To facilitate interaction, each section of the course will be limited in size. I believe that the ideal size is about seven to ten students.

The course will extend over fifteen weeks.

I have used Skype in the past but these days Zoom is all the rage, so I suppose that I’ll use Zoom.

For the first time, I’ll charge a tuition fee of $50. This fee will pay the fees for Zoom, and the cost of advertising the course on Facebook, as well as for your diploma:

This classy hat expresses the central theme of the course: that games should be about people, not things. Wear it with pride to the opera, weddings, and funerals. Only graduates of this course get this hat; should you ever encounter somebody else wearing it, you can share thoughts with a kindred spirit!

To sign up for the course, you must provide me with the information I need to set it up. Send me an email (use the contact form above) specifying the following:

The time slots that you can attend. I need both the day of the week and the time windows for each day. I have had people in this course from every continent save Antarctica, so it will be difficult to find a time slot that works for enough people.

There is no set date for beginning this course. I will keep a database of prospective students, and as soon as I get at least seven students who can fit into a time slot, I will send each of them an email announcing the beginning of the course. I will expect each student to render tuition payment at that time. As I get more student candidates, I will open up more sections of the course.

I’ve probably left out some important details, so please email me with any questions.

The material in the previous course can be found here. I’ll be making some minor modifications to this material, and adding a number of new lessons.
