I’ve been fretting over a problem with the role of Merlin. His function is to provide Arthur with Socratic dialogues that will guide him toward the solution to the crisis he’ll face at the end. But my current set of dialogues are all over the map; they don’t have any central theme. I think that I’ll have to throw them all away and start over, building a new set of dialogues focusing on a central theme. But first I must specify that theme clearly.
That theme must concern the fundamental difference between the options available to him.
