Software Projects for Volunteers

Over the years I have left quite a few projects unfinished, each for its own reason. However, these projects remain interesting and might be worthwhile exercises for young game designers. I am thereby organizing these projects and offering them to volunteers who wish to complete them. I will try to document each project thoroughly enough to permit the volunteer to finish the job.

I have one absolute requirement: every project must be programmed in JavaScript. The ultimate purpose is to make these designs readily available to the public. I have been committed to Java for twenty years now, but Java is no longer tenable as a platform for consumer application. The best platform for that (as far as I understand) is JavaScript. Yes, I know, there are a zillion languages out there and every one has its dedicated cadre of hardcore programmers who insist that theirs is far and away the best language for software delivery. I am not religious about this; I’ll approve any language that makes the software available to the user without any downloads or special requirements.

If any of these projects piques your interest, read through the documentation explaining what needs to be done to complete the project. You don’t need to master that documentation; just make sure that you understand what you’re getting yourself into. Then contact me to discuss an arrangement. You’ll definitely get credit for your work. If you want money for the effort, perhaps we can run a proposal on Patreon, in which case you’d get all the money generated for the project — I don’t want it.

Please contact me if you have any questions now or later.

Here is the current list of potential projects. When I have finished with the documentation for each project, I’ll link the list entry to the documentation. If an entry in this list is not a link, then it’s not ready yet. It will take me some time to get all the documentation in place. The list is presented in what I expect to be the same order in which I’ll tackle the documentation.
