I have never understood this: while I have difficulty understanding speech, I have high perception of timbre. I frequently must ask people to repeat what they said, and I don’t even try to understand somebody speaking in a noisy environment. At the same time, I can identify actors whose voices I know by subtle aspects of their vocal patterns. The most striking example of this came a few days ago when Kathy and I were watching an episode of Deep Space Nine. I noticed something odd about one of the characters, so I listened carefully. It took a while, but I successfully identified the actor: J.G. Hertzler. He plays the Klingon General Martok most of the time, but he also played a changeling called Laas in the episode we were watching. I attach here a recording of Hertzler as Martok, then Hertzler as Laas. Can you detect the subtle similarities that identify them as the same person?
